THORNTON - Skyler Maki was like a lot of girls her age. The 4-year-old was happy, healthy and involved in athletics. Then, one day, the vibrant little girl just died. "No warning, no notice, we had no idea she was sick," Jennifer Maki, Skyler's mother, said.

Maki says her daughter suffered from primary pulmonary hypertension, causing her to go into sudden cardiac arrest.

"They don't believe she was born with it. It's not hereditary and it's what they call a silent killer," Maki said. "It was undiagnosed."

This was years ago, in the spring of 2007. At the time, Skyler was attending the Primrose School of Thornton. After her death, teachers and administrators dedicated a garden to Skyler. Now, Maki says it's her turn to give back.

Kane County Chronicle

And that, she said, is why she has recently taken the leap into the field of early childhood education, becoming the first franchise owner of a Primrose School in Kane County and, in the process, joining the ranks of a growing number of private preschool operators competing for the business of educating young children in the Fox Valley.

Readiness for School: Beyond Numbers and Letters
